General Paddling Info - Paddling is the focus of club activities. All children are encouraged to participate in paddling at a level in which they are comfortable. Paddling is divided into small boats (canoes and kayaks), and war canoe (14 paddlers and a cox), with paddlers grouped according to their skill and age level. Club boats and paddles are made available to members during practice time. Paddlers are not permitted to use the boats outside of their scheduled program hours. There are a few "high-performance" boats which are only available to more experienced paddlers. Boat access is under the discretion of the head coach and boats and equipment committee.
Water Safety- The Canadian Canoe Association (CCA) requires all paddlers to pass a standard swim test. Typically the test consists of (but may not limited to) swimming from the Senobe docks to the finish line and back, treading water for five minutes and performing a tip, turn and tow exercise in a canoe or kayak. It is important for parents to realize that this test is a crucial part of the safety net set up for young paddlers. The CCA and the Canadian Coast Guard set out minimum on-water safety requirements. All Atom age participants will be required to wear PFDs at all times while on the water. Peewee and Bantam participants are required to wear life belts at all times while on the water. For further information, see the Canadian Canoe Association Code of Safety.
Swimming lessons are usually offered in two sessions for the summer and are Red Cross designated programs. Swimming lessons generally begin on the swim dock and swimmers should assemble there at lesson time. In order to avoid accidents between swimmers and boats, swimmers are required to keep to the swimming area and away from the boat dock. The only area of the dock from which a swimmer may enter the water is between the lane lines.
Masters Paddling - Masters Paddling is for adults age 25 and up who would like to compete in various regattas over the summer or who would just enjoy an opportunity to get on the water and learn to paddle. Though the main focus is War Canoe, many members enjoy learning how to paddle smaller canoes and kayaks as well. Many of the Senobe Masters have been paddling with the club for years, some are parents of younger paddlers and some are novice paddlers out for a good time.
Senobe offers a competitive paddling program for Masters level paddlers in the evenings during the late spring and summer months, and we're up and running as of April 20, 2008 thanks to Masters Coach Jay MacNeil and Kevin Bonang stepping into the boat. Lots of new paddlers are starting this year. It is a wonderful opportunity for having fun, learning lots and getting a good work-out to boot!
Masters Paddling takes place weekday evenings with War Canoe on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 6:30 p.m. to be on the water for 6:45 p.m. Small Boat practices are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:45 p.m. for 7:00 pm. No experience is necessary.
Interested? Simply show up any evening Masters paddling is on, and be prepared to work hard and have fun! Our Master paddlers also usually compete in the national paddling championships, CANMAS every summer. If you'd like any more information on our Masters program, please contact our Masters Representatives Ritchie MacDonald and Donna King at info@senobe.com.
