Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When does the summer program begin and end?

A: The program usually begins the first week of July and ends in late August or early September. Participants are required to go through a swim test prior to being allowed in the boats. The swim test normally takes place near the end of June. Program dates will be confirmed on the web site in advance.

Q: I understand that coaches go away during Nationals. Does the day program continue?

A: The Head Coach accompanies Senobe athletes to Nationals and some Senobe Coaches will be competing as athletes at Nationals. The day program continues during this period and is staffed appropriately.

Q: What are the dates for Nationals?

Nationals are from Sept. 2-5, 2009 in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Q: Are there any other dates that I need to be aware of?

A: Regatta Schedule: http://www.adckc.ca/images/Documents/Calendar2009.pdf
Canoe’09 World Championships are from August 12-15, 2009

Q: Does my child need a lifejacket or lifebelt to paddle?

A: All paddlers in the Bantam, Pee Wee and Atom age groups must wear a flotation device. Parents must provide a lifejacket for Atom paddlers and lifebelts for Pee and Bantam paddlers. Lifebelts are available for sale at Registration.

Q: How do I know which level my child is in?

A: Levels are determined by the paddler’s year of birth and are shown on the Summer Membership Registration Form. Atoms are paddlers under age 10 as of January 1st , 2009. PeeWees are under 12 as of January 1st. Bantams are under 14 as of January 1st. Midgets are under 16 as of January 1st. Juveniles are under 18 as of Jan.1 . Masters are grownups over age 25.

A paddler may “paddle up” i.e. move up to the next level with the consensus of the Head Coach and parents but cannot “paddle down”

Q: What is a bun?

A: A bun is a soft cushion made from crushed cork and covered in fabric that fits under the knee during war canoe or canoeing. Some paddlers prefer to kneel on a foam block that has been “scooped out” to fit under the knee. Either buns or blocks should be available for purchase at the canteen or contact Coach Rob to order one.

Q: What is a singlet?

A: A singlet is a sleeveless, loose fitting shirt that Pee Wee paddlers and above wear during the regattas. Atom paddlers may purchase a long-sleeve racing Atlantic Division shirt that all Atom paddlers use to compete or they MAY wear a royal blue Senobe t-shirt during regattas. The long sleeved “racing” shirt is being phased in for Atom paddlers at all Clubs. Both shirts will be for sale at the canteen. Please note that paddlers are not permitted to compete without a singlet or a t-shirt.

Q: Does my child have to participate in the regattas?

A: All paddlers are strongly encouraged to participate in the regattas, however, it is recognized that not everyone desires to compete. This is an individual choice that is best made between the child and parent with the input of the Head Coach.

Q: If my child does not participate in the regattas am I still charged CKC fees?

A: Yes, all paddlers must pay CKC (Canoe Kayak Canada) fees. This money is submitted directly to CKC for use nationally and within the Atlantic Division and assists with sport, athletic and coaching development.

Q: Why do I have to provide supervision for my child if they're under 12 yrs of age?

A : Senobe Aquatic Club does not provide continuous child supervision throughout the day. The children are supervised by coaches at times, however, to ensure your child’s safety it is required that a responsible individual be at Senobe at any time when the child is present.

Q: What is the $20 fundraising money being used for and what do I do with the tickets?

A: In order to raise sufficient monies to invest in items such as new boats and equipment, the club has added $20 in Sportscape Lottery Tickets to each membership this year. Members may choose to keep the tickets for themselves, or re-sell them to family members, friends or others in order to recover the $20. In either case, the ticket stubs must be returned to the club no later than August 1, 2009 in order to be returned to Sport Nova Scotia for the draw. Tickets may be returned to the club using the "drop box" that will be placed outside the coaches office inside the club, or by mail/drop off to Senobe Aquatic Club, P.O. Box 483, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia B2Y 3Y8 . Further information on the Sportscape prize packages is available at: http://www.sportnovascotia.ca/Fundraising/Sportscape/tabid/127/Default.aspx.

Q: Are there lifeguards on the beach?

A: Yes. Senobe Aquatic Club employs two lifeguards, who share lifeguard and swimming lesson duties. Senobe is a family club and welcomes children of all ages to enjoy the water. Any child under the age of 12 must be supervised while at the club including their time on the beach and in the water. Parents are encouraged to watch all children while they are swimming.
