Summer Programs by Age Group

Overall, our summer programs focus on skill development and fun with friends! We hope this breakdown by group helps give you an idea of what to expect this summer paddling at Senobe.

Note: all paddlers must complete a swim test (June 30) to participate in Senobe’s youth summer programs.

Kiddie Canoe/Kayak drop-in (parents welcome!)

If your paddler has a younger sibling under age 6 who can’t wait to get into a boat, we’d love to introduce them to paddling at a Kiddie Canoe/Kayak drop-in session! Mon-Fri (tentatively 12-1pm) coaches will supervise as the little ones play on our stable plastic boats (sometimes connected by a rope so coaches can reel them in), canoes and SUP boards. If numbers allow,  they may all go out together in our 10+ person dragon boat. Kiddie Canoe/Kayak is all about helping children build confidence on the water in a fun and less-structured, yet safe and supervised environment.

U7

Our U7 paddlers are typically on the water twice a day: one session will be in the dragon boat, and the other in small boats (kayaks and canoes). If the weather isn’t cooperating, our coaches adapt with dryland or indoor activities like tag, capture the flag, duck-duck-goose, cards, etc. While we focus a lot on fun, U7s will learn basic safety principles and how to respect equipment as they get introduced to different kinds of boats and paddling techniques (kayak, canoe, and dragon boat).

U10

Our U10 paddlers go on the water twice a day: one session in the war canoe (one big canoe with 14 paddlers and one coach steering), and one in small boats (kayaks and canoes). If the weather isn’t cooperating, our coaches adapt with dryland or indoor activities like tag, capture the flag, duck-duck-goose, cards, etc. While we focus a lot on fun, U10s will work on developing their balance and technical skills so they can feel confident in solo and team boats. They’ll also learn how to respect equipment, including how to carry and put away boats/paddles safely, walking (not running) on the docks/in boat bays, having awareness of others around them, and what to do if they fall out of a boat (all paddlers review this when they do their swim test).

U10s also have the option to take part in regattas (race days). There are typically 2 regattas during the summer (find the 2022 racing schedule here). These regattas are a great low-stress introduction to racing in canoes and kayaks with a focus on fun, working as a team, skill development, and showing off your progress (you may be surprised!). Regatta participation is encouraged, but totally optional! We just ask that you please let your coach know in advance if you plan to attend or not - they will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.

U12, U14, U16

Paddlers in U12/U14/U16 have three scheduled sessions per day: dryland training, war canoe, and small boats. Those who are new to paddling in these age groups will still get a full introduction to safety, equipment and technique as they work on developing balance and confidence on the water. Paddlers who already have some experience can focus on refining their skills, building strength and fitness, and getting race ready.

Regattas (race days) are more structured for these age groups than they are for U10s, but still focus on fun, working as a team, skill development, and showing off your progress (you may be surprised!). Regatta participation is encouraged, but totally optional! We just ask that you please let your coach know in advance if you plan to attend or not - they will also be happy to answer any questions you may have. Find the tentative 2022 regatta schedule here.

High Performance

Paddlers aged U14 and up ready to take their training to another level may be invited by Head Coach Rob Baert to train with the High Performance Group. This group practices twice a day with a strong focus on fitness and race prep for events like National Championships, Canada Games, Junior World Championships and other high level paddling events. If you have questions about the High Performance program, feel free to chat with Coach Rob.
